As far back as I can remember my dad told me that Gordie Howe was the best player who ever lived. Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Bobby Hull all said he was the best player who ever lived, who are we to doubt them, or my dad? A self professed ‘lucky farm boy from Saskatchewan’, Mr. Hockey has been with us our entire lives and now that he is gone I feel that I have lost an uncle or a close family friend.
We all know about his achievements on the ice; 32 seasons in pro hockey, 20 consecutive years in the top 5 scorers in the NHL, the Gordie Howe Hat Trick (of which he only actually had 2), the elbows, the longevity… but from all accounts he was also an amazing human being who would sweep his neighbours driveway or squidgy a strangers windshield at a gas station and never tell anyone who he was or why he did it. They just don’t make them like Gordie any more and that is a sad thing, because the world would be a much better place if they did.
